About Local Records Program

Pursuant to 1 V.S.A. § 317a (Disposition of public records) all public records are considered permanent unless destruction has been authorized under a record schedule approved by the State Archivist or by law. The Vermont Local Records Program is intended to assist local governments meet their record-keeping requirements through ongoing collaboration and contact with stakeholder organizations; development and implementation of justifiable and defensible record retention schedules and policies that meet the obligations of municipalities; and by offering targeted education opportunities to municipal officials for efficient and sustainable management of municipal records into the future.
