VTLIB Tuesday Talk: Raising Spirits: Spooky Stories from Vermont Public Records

Public records hold clues to many tales, including those of grisly murders, the special powers of spirit mediums, tragic disasters, and mysterious disappearances. In the spirit of Archives Month – and Halloween – staff and friends of the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration will share what they discovered in the state archives that put some meat on the bare-boned facts. Speakers: Archivist Sally Blanchard-O’Brien; Archivist Mariessa Dobrick; Historian Brian Lindner; and Deputy Secretary of State Chris Winters.

ARCHIVES MONTH EVENT! A 2020 Vision of Recordkeeping in Vermont: Digital Communications, Social Media and the Law

On Friday, October 18, 2019, Jason R. Baron, Of Counsel at Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP and former Director of Litigation for the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), will be presenting "A 2020 Vision of Recordkeeping in Vermont: Digital Communications, Social Media and the Law." Synopsis: Vermont public agencies are responsible for managing public records regardless of format and the format is increasingly digital. We will survey the landscape of managing and preserving electronic communications ranging from traditional e-mail to modern ephemeral messages and examine recent legal cases surrounding the use of social media. Preregistration is required and attendance is capped at 40. Join us for an encore performance of raising spirits from the archives. Gather around the circle and hear from the spectres whose stories have been captured in Vermont public records, and stay for an exhibit of the records that inspired the stories. You will hear tales of murder and disaster, of mediums and disappearances. The talk will begin at 6, but doors open at 5 for the special exhibit.?
