IMPORTANT NOTICE: New requirements for the safety and security of birth and death certificates go into effect on July 1, 2019. These changes will provide better protection against misuse of these legal documents and reduce the potential for identity theft. The changes also streamline the statewide system for creating, storing and tracking birth and death certificates.
Certified copies of vital records cost $10.00 per certification and beginning July 1, 2019, certified copies of birth and death records may be requested from any town clerk in the State of Vermont. More information is available from the Vermont Department of Health.
Certified Copies Available through the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration
Certified copies of vital records may be requested online through the Vital Records Request Service or in person. Authenticating a certificate for foreign use is an additional $10.00. Marriages and divorce records may also be requested by U.S. Mail if the event took place more than five (5) years ago.
- More recent marriage records are only available from the Vermont Department of Health and the clerk of the town where the event took place.
- More recent divorce records are only available from the Vermont Department of Health.
All requests, whether received online or through the mail, are processed within a week. Expedited shipping of records is also available at an additional charge. Expedited orders will be shipped overnight on the day your order is fulfilled.
