    Scope: Series consists of photographs that primarily document road and bridge construction and repairs. Lantern slides from 1909-1914 depict steam drills, blasting, men at work, clay roads, muddy roads, washed out roads, ice jams, steel bridges, wooden bridges and general scenic shots. Photographs dating from 1919 to the 1930's include aerial shots, bridge and road construction, historic sites, lakes and lake roads, winter scenes, mountains and mountain roads. The massive destruction of the 1927 flood is documented as is flood reconstruction. Many of these photographs are Vermont Federal Aid Projects and Vermont Flood Relief Projects. There are a few photos from the 1940's and early 1950's showing snow plowing, sanding, weed spraying, snow fences and muddy roads. There are 36,655 images taken by the Right-of-Way Division between 1958 and 1978, that primarily document the building of the interstate. (See related series HG-129, Highway Right of Way Interstate and Non-Interstate). There are also 45 photographs of the 1992 flood. There are eight Department of Highways films, dating from 1929-1957.

    Scope: Series consists of applications (including plans) to the 1989 National Timber Bridge Design Competition. The National Timber Bridge Initiative was funded by the U.S. Congress in 1989. Its purpose was to improve rural transportation networks and revitalize rural economies by using wood for construction of bridges and other transportation.
