Now I See Why That Happened!

 

This activity goes with the TIMELINE OF SUFFRAGE HISTORY handout. It will help you to read, analyze and correlate the information it contains. It also leads you to work with history to discern cause and effect relationships between major events and the changes that resulted from them. The events on this activity are listed in chronological order; the effects of the laws are not.

For each event, write the letter of the effect that followed the important historic milestone. Note: One of the events will have two matching effects.

THEIR EFFECTS:
A.Allows 18-year olds the right to vote

B.Enacts first mandatory poll tax & literacy test

C.Provides for easier voter registration for all at government places like post offices and drivers license offices

D.Protects US citizens with disabilities, voters not able to read and write, and those not fluent in English

E.Defines who is a citizen and guarantees them equal protection under the law

F.Announces formally a desire for voting rights for women

G.Extends suffrage to blacks in the District of Columbia and U.S. territories

H.Defines the "right to vote"

I.Extends 15th Amendment's right to vote to all elections, local, state and federal

J.Sets the precedent of full suffrage for women

K.Outlaws the poll tax

L.Guarantees suffrage to all women in the U.S.

M.Provides for federal referees at the polls to help voters register and vote

N.Provides citizens with the ability to elect ALL members of Congress
