For immediate release Vermont League of Women Voters Hosts Independence Day Voter Registration Secretary of State Deb Markowitz calls on Vermont citizens to celebrate Independence Day by registering to vote. Montpelier. The League of Women Voters of Central Vermont will be registering voters at Montpelier's Independence Day celebration on July 3. In making the announcement, League Chapter President Nancy Lynch said, “In this historic Presidential election year, The League of Women Voters of Central Vermont is committed to increasing civic participation through voter registration, and providing information about key issues. Our Independence Day activities are just the beginning of our work this election season. We invite folks to stop by our booth on the State House lawn to register to vote, to ask questions, and to show their support of their local league.” The League is nonpartisan, and neither supports nor opposes political parties or candidates. Founded in 1920 by members of the suffragist movement, it is an organization whose mission is to encourage the active participation of citizens in government, through education and advocacy. Secretary of State Deb Markowitz praised the League's mission, stating “The Secretary of State's office is pleased to support the League's efforts to maximize the number of registered voters in Vermont. Tuesday, July 8, 2008 6:00 – 7:30 pm West Rutland American Legion Secretary of State Deb Markowitz will conduct a training session in Rutland County for town clerks and board of civil authority members to prepare them for the upcoming elections on Tuesday, July 8, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the West Rutland American Legion. Secretary of State Markowitz and Elections Director Kathy DeWolfe have scheduled 10 such workshops around the state before the primary in September. Vermont law requires the office of the secretary of state to “organize regional workshops for election officials, provide them with informational materials about the conduct of elections and recounts and otherwise help them run elections in conformance with state and federal law.” 17 V.S.A. Section 2457. The regular presiding officer of each town or an assistant designated by the board of civil authority is required to attend at least one of these election workshops every two years. All election officials are encouraged to attend and it’s not too late to sign up. Interested parties should call their local municipal clerk to sign up. Thursday, July 10, 2008 Secretary of State Deb Markowitz will conduct a training session in Chittenden County for town clerks and board of civil authority members to prepare them for the upcoming elections on Thursday, July 10, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Williston Town Hall. Secretary of State Markowitz and Elections Director Kathy DeWolfe have scheduled 10 such workshops around the state before the primary in September. Vermont law requires the office of the secretary of state to “organize regional workshops for election officials, provide them with informational materials about the conduct of elections and recounts and otherwise help them run elections in conformance with state and federal law.” 17 V.S.A. Section 2457. The regular presiding officer of each town or an assistant designated by the board of civil authority is required to attend at least one of these election workshops every two years.
