Secretary Markowitz Says Its Time For Local
Government’s Annual Check-Up
Secretary of State Publishes Tune Up for
Towns
Montpelier. Secretary of State Deborah Markowitz today
announced the publication of a new pamphlet entitled "Tune Up For
Towns." Tune Up For Towns is designed as an easy to read
handbook, much like a checklist, that walks town officials through a
top-to-bottom review of the laws that govern how things should be done
by the town.
Secretary Markowitz said, "We go to the dentist twice a
year for a checkup - not because we have a known problem, but because we
want to know if there is one we haven't yet noticed. We provide regular
checkups for our cars, our furnaces and our dogs for the same reason. So
why not the town?" Markowitz said, "It does not make sense for our towns
to wait until the newspapers or angry citizens tell them what they
haven't done or have done badly. Tune Up For Towns is designed to
help our towns avoid problems. Most Towns will not need an exhaustive
overhaul, but hopefully Tune Up for Towns will let them know if
they do."
