PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release Contact: Martha Trombley (802) 828-2148 September 19, 2000
MARKOWITZ CERTIFIES SEPTEMBER PRIMARY RESULTS Secretary of State Deborah Markowitz has certified election returns from the September 12, 2000 primary election. The official canvass, conducted by Markowitz and representatives of the Republican and Democratic parties was completed on September 19th.
Abstracts containing official returns from the 246 towns were sent to the Secretary of State's Office where they were reviewed and totaled to prepare the official statewide results. Prior to the canvass, all returns from the primary election were considered unofficial. Results were compiled by the Secretary of State for U.S. Senate, U.S. Representative, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Treasurer, Secretary of State, Auditor and Attorney General.
"With the completion of the canvass, we now have official returns and will certify the winning candidates who have been nominated to run in the November 7 general election to local election officials," explained Markowitz.
A complete list of certified candidates and official September primary returns are available on the Secretary of State's web site at www.sec.state.vt.us.
Markowitz said “I am pleased to see that we had a very strong turnout in this primary.” 122,437 Vermonters turned out to vote in the primary, from a list of 408,000 registered voters. “The last time we saw such a strong turnout was in 1970,” said Markowitz.
Of votes cast, 82,713 were on the Republican ballot and 39,538 were on the Democratic Ballot. In addition, 9000 voters (nearly 8%) cast their votes by absentee ballot. Results of note were that Bill Sorrell won both the Republican and Democratic nominations having received 4283 to write in candidate Ed Stokes’ 2701 votes.
Republican treasurer James Douglas also received enough write-in votes on the Democratic ballot to win the Democratic nomination. Sorrell and Douglas may choose to accept both nominations and be listed on the November ballot as having both the Democrat and Republican nominations.
