College Voter Guide Home

Your voter registration choices:

College students can register to vote in either their hometown OR college town, but cannot register in both locations.  If you are already registered in your hometown, you can re-register in your college town.  Once you do this, the clerk in your hometown will be notified and will remove your name from the voter checklist so you will be registered to vote in only one location.

What kind of college student are you?

  • Vermont resident attending a Vermont college - you may register to vote in either your hometown OR your college town.

  • Vermont resident attending college out-of-state - you may register to vote in either your hometown OR your college town, subject to the laws of the state where you attend college.

  • Out-of-state resident attending college in Vermont - if you are a resident of another state attending college in Vermont you may register to vote in either your hometown OR your college town.

How do I register to vote?

1.  Get a voter registration form (also called Application for Addition to the Checklist).

2.  Download a form here!  They are also available from the Secretary of State's Office, from your town office, from your student services office, from political parties and campaigns, and from non-partisan civics organizations.

3.  Complete the form. The form asks for a Vermont driver's license number.  If you do not have a Vermont driver's license or a Vermont non-motor identification, you must include the last four digits of your social security number instead.

4.  Return the form to the town or city clerk where you reside.  Find your clerk here, or call 1-800-439-VOTE.  The clerk will notify you in writing whether or not your application has been approved.  If you have not received notification by the week before the election, call your clerk.
